Impactful Language was an interdisciplinary collaboration between FIT’s Photography Department, Communication Design Department, and the Grants Office. Sponsored by FIT’s Diversity Council Grant, this guided experiential learning project was designed to bring awareness to the power of words. During its making, participants from the college’s community, including faculty, staff, and students, posed for portraits and shared personal statements about the impact of offensive language on their everyday lives. The outcome, a series of posters and video interviews, was displayed on campus and received overwhelmingly positive support.
In 2018, the posters from Impactful Language project were selected to enter the permanent collection of Poster House. Poster House is a new museum that will open in 2019 in Manhattan that is dedicated to presenting the impact, culture, and design of posters, both as historical documents and methods of contemporary visual communication. The creation of this museum was led by some of the most respected leaders in the field of graphic design, including Ellen Lupton, Steven Heller, and Paula Scher.
