Project 1: Glossary
Brief:
Design multi-page spreads with the only type. Students will learn how to organize and communicate different kinds of information, and design it consistently in a structure. The project will start with the research of typeface*. The focus is to enhance the knowledge of typography and its practical application in the grid system. No photographs. Simple illustrations and graphical elements if necessary. Students will work with provided textual content.

Typographic Terms

*A typeface is a family of fonts (very often by the same designer). Within a typeface, there will be fonts of varying weights or other variations. e.g., light, bold, semi-bold, condensed, italic, and so forth. Each such variation is a different font.

Project Specifications:
– Dimension: 8.5” x 11” (letter size)
– Number of pages: 2 spreads (4 pages) and up to 6 pages
– No photographs. Simple illustration only if necessary

Duration of the project:
– Three weeks

Project 2: Three recipes
Brief:
Design three recipes including additional information such as ingredients, nutrition benefits, and other facts and stories. Students will explore layouts with columns and rows in grids, and understand a different kind of content. The focus is on typography, grid system, and page layout. Students will develop a design system through practical ways of working with paragraphs and character styles.

Project 3: A City Guide (major project)
Brief:
Design a city guide, including a cover, table of contents, introduction, and core content pages. The focus is on layout design and visual hierarchy in order to create effective communication. Emphasize the typographical detail, consistency, and editorial design elements on the page. Students will continue to develop a design using a grid system, working with paragraph and character styles, and exploring imagery styles and other visual systems such as maps.
Students will work with provided textual content. However, students are encouraged to find their resources (photographs, other visual elements, and related information) according to their creative design solution.

Project 4: Digital Layout
Brief:
Introduction of a digital layout using the alternative layout in InDesign. Students will create a Behance portfolio page with one of the projects they’ve done in this class. The focus is on a screen-based digital page layout.
